Coco Would Not Be Pleased...

Two days ago was the anniversary of the Grande Dame's death. Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel passed away on January 11, 1971 and it took me two days of mulling it over to articulate how she would not pleased by what has transpired.

As I mentioned in my post on January 11th, both Harper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair were patiently awaiting my arrival from work to dive in and glorify in their splendor. However, on this day commemorating the passing of one of the greatest women ever, I was dismayed to open my favorite magazine to discover none other than the disreputable Lindsay Lohan in a Chanel ad. What?! What?! Blasphemy! Blasphemy!

Someone please explain to me how a woman of no substance, class, or taste could possibly represent the name epitomizing substance, class, and taste. While Coco reminded us “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” I am sure she did not mean to paint obscenities on one's fingernails nor to live in a drunken stupor as a public spectacle.

I believe in forgiveness and not holding a grudge. But truly, Ms. Lohan and her whacked-out family have been given more chances than the average person would ever receive. While I wish her well in her latest rehab attempt, I truly hope the meter on her 15 minutes has expired.

Bring back the beautiful Audrey Tatou in her backless black gown. Adorn the amazing Keira Knightly in "Premiere" fragrance until she reeks to the heavens. Catherine Deneuve can represent at any age and it was none other than Ms. Marilyn Monroe who shared she slept in nothing but Chanel No. 5.

I'm sorry, but Ms. Lohan has not earned the right to be amongst these amazing women honoring the pioneer of women's fashion. I just wish those privileged to work for the House of Chanel recognized the same.

  1. I had to think about this too. My knee jerk reaction is, "NO! Not Lindsay Lohan!" But maybe Coco would be OK with this from the standpoint of granting second chances--which she herself benefited from as well (consorting with her German lover during occupation in WWII?). Ms. Lohan has very little to give in the way of talent (although I thought she was charming as a child actor), comes from high dysfunction and has an addiction problem...maybe this is the last chance she will ever get to redefine herself?

  2. My dear, I agree with you completely. Ms Lohan is not worthy of appearing in a Chanel ad. I don't believe for an instant that Ms Lohan will change her ways, and she does NOT epitomize the class of Coco Chanel's style. I hate to sound harsh, but really this young woman isn't going to change. She is worth too much and receives too much publicity to do so. I am dismayed that the powers that be didn't exercise good sense on this issue.
