I'm Still Listening to Wax, I'm Not Using The CD...

No doubt about it...we are a music family. All three of my children play instruments and I have shared with you, dear reader, my love for singing. I never said it was good singing, but it is a form of an animal in pain singing nonetheless.

My husband and I have have always held an eclectic taste in music from soul, blues, jazz, rock, metal, classical, and for me you can add pop, disco, and gospel. Thus, the three kiddies have grown up with this eclectic taste as well.

I remember the day years ago when I showed my then-eight-year-old son a record album from our extensive collection. He just looked at it.

"What is it?" he asked.

When I told him, he looked at me like I was crazy. (I get that a lot...it doesn't offend me anymore.) Then he inquired how one would go about hearing the music on said apparatus. So I showed him the record player.

Light shone down from the heavens and illuminated the turntable. I gently laid the album in place and gingerly set the needle on the record. Let's just say I didn't remember it sounding as such way back when I played these albums 24 hours a day non-stop; I had definitely become spoiled by CD's. My son was even less impressed. Thus ended the journey down "when Mom was a metal-chick teenager" lane.

Imagine my surprise last week when I came home from work and was informed by my now-teenage son that he confiscated my turntable, connected it to the sound-system in his room, and "borrowed" some of my albums. (Side note: if you hear a deafening scream, it will undoubtedly be the result of finding one of the treasures laying on his bed sans record jacket or naked on the turntable. After 16 years I can't get him to pick underwear up off the floor, so I figure it's just a matter of time.)

He knew about my '80's metal, techno, Psychedelic Furs fetishes, but he didn't realize my obsession interest in so many others, such as Billy Idol. I mean, c'mon...Cradle Of Love is a total get-your-rock on song, and if you don't believe me, just watch the video; it's one of my favorites. Rockin' song, great shoes, beautiful lingerie, good wine, homage to Marilyn and Andy Warhol, a young woman totally bien dans sa peau, and an uptight conservative totally needing to loosen up.

Any given evening you can find me rockin' down the highway on my drive home from work...what a way to release the day!

Son is enjoying good music sans profanity and women being called "Ho's". Well, except for the Beastie Boys, which they later apologized for and I give homage to with this blog's title from the fantastic Sure Shot:

I want to say a little something that's long overdue
The disrespect to women has got to be through
To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends
I want to offer my love and respect to the end.

I am really pleased to find he is genuinely enjoying the albums and can't believe how cool his parents were are. I tried to tell him...he just never believed me.

  1. Wow - I don't think I have any vinyl left.
But I have many happy memories dancing around in my basement with Madonna's "Lucky Star" spinning on the turntable.

  3. I have a record player and have picked up a few vinyl albums over the years--they don't get played the way they should. But you and I NEED to get together and JAM--Psychedelic Furs, OMD, Tears For Fears. Billy Idol--Channel 44 on XMRadio--HELLO!!!!!!!! You are speaking my language. xxBliss (I am a sad little soul).

  4. I grew up listening to my parent's records and still love them. They had a lot of Beatles, Doobie Brothers and my mom had some great Carlie Simon. I remember when I was 18 or 19 my parents gave me my own portable turn table! I still have it!
