And For Your Penance...

Every day I grow more and more concerned how close we are to living Pixar's movie WALL-E. Loved the movie, terrified of the message.

This occurred to me the first time I was driving down the highway and the billboard changed. It freaked me out a little bit, but after awhile I got used to the advertisements changing faster than my TV stations on a night when Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, and Real Housewives are all on simultaneously. It boggles the mind.

Not too long ago I shared with you how funerals are being streamed on-line. Today I learned from my girl, Maureen Dowd, there is now an app to facilitate a confession. Yes, you read that correctly...to make a confession.

From what I gleaned the intentions may have been there, but you know the saying: the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. After determining your age and gender, the app guides the user through some soul-searching questions to promote an examination of conscience. Oh, okay...uhm, what?

Maureen reports the creators of said app got their idea from none other than the Pope. While I guess I applaud him for trying to get with the times, I have greater concern over more folks believing they don't need the Church because they can go at it alone. What happened to using the rosary for meditation? What happened to sitting in prayerful silence? What happened to conversation with one's priest to increase one's faith and desire to go forth in the love and peace of Christ?

I am all for technology, but I don't think this is the way. One priest in the article emphasizes this app is to prompt discussion. We don't need technology for that...just start talking. I implore you. Before you find yourself constantly glued to a computer or television unable to have an original thought. God doesn't require prayer to be perfect. Besides, He already knows what lies in our souls. He is just waiting for us to own it.

  1. Another very thought provoking post Beth.
You've actually inspired me to turn my computer off and spend some time with the family.
    Thank you!
